GUIDES · WOODEN OTTOMAN BEDS

Real oak and walnut are back at Furl: two wooden ottoman beds, made by hand in Nottingham, with up to 40cm of storage hidden underneath. Every bed is made to order for you.

Wooden storage beds used to be among our bestsellers. Then we started to worry about what all that solid hardwood was costing the planet, so we stopped. Now they're back, and we think they're better than the beds they replace.

The new beds are made from real oak or walnut veneer on a stable core. You see and feel real wood on every surface, but each bed uses a fraction of the hardwood, and the panels stay flat and true for years instead of moving with the seasons the way solid boards do.

Responsibly Sourced, Independently Checked

The oak and walnut veneers are FSC-certified, so the wood comes from forests that are managed responsibly and can be traced back to source.

We're also a certified B Corp. That means our whole business is independently assessed on how it treats people and the planet: where our materials come from, how we look after our team and customers, and the impact of how we make and deliver every bed. It isn't a one-off badge. We have to prove we still meet the standards to recertify every three years, and our commitment to people and planet, not just profit, is written into our company's articles.

Why Real Wood

People tend to choose a wooden bed for one of three reasons.

It brings the outdoors in. Some people simply love being close to nature, and real oak and walnut, with their grain and warmth, bring a little of that calm into the bedroom.

It's easy to keep clean. There's no fabric for dust to settle into. A quick wipe and it's done, which matters if you're sensitive to dust or just like a bedroom that stays fresh.

It feels solid and made to last. A wooden bed looks and feels like it will be with you for years, and with a stable veneered core, it will.

Two Beds, Two Ways to Sleep

Air Wood walnut ottoman bed on slim tapered legs with a walnut headboard

Air Wood stands on slim tapered wooden legs, so it feels light and open. Its slim legs lift it 14.5cm off the floor, so most robot vacuums can clean right under the edges, where the dust collects, without you ever having to move the bed or get down on your knees. It has 33cm of storage, or 38cm with Air+. From £1,605 in oak.

Max Wood oak ottoman bed sitting low on a plinth

Max Wood sits low on a plinth and is our deepest wooden ottoman bed: 35cm of storage, or 40cm with Max+. It sits on a hidden plinth, so there's no gap underneath at all: no dust can ever get under it, and there's nothing to hoover around or reach under. That's why Max Wood is so often chosen by people with allergies, and by anyone who likes a bedroom that stays spotless. From £1,750 in oak.

Both come in oak or walnut, in eight sizes from single to emperor, with or without a matching wood headboard. If you'd rather go without, we've put together a page of wooden ottoman beds without a headboard.

A Calmer Bedroom, Hidden Underneath

Lift the base and the whole space under the mattress is yours: spare duvets, out-of-season clothes, suitcases, even the ironing board. The base lifts on gas struts matched to your mattress, the slats are sprung for comfort, and the frame is only 2cm, so the bed is barely bigger than the mattress itself. Everything out of sight, and a bedroom that feels like a hotel room every day.

Made to Order and Built in Your Room

Every bed, in oak or walnut and in any size, is handmade to order in Nottingham and usually arrives in 6–8 weeks. Our own team delivers and builds the bed in your room, free (terms apply), and you have 60 days to live with it at home.

You can also spread the cost over 6 or 9 months interest-free, with a 50% deposit. Credit subject to status. Payment options.

Oak or Walnut?

Oak is light, bright and easy to live with. It suits Scandinavian and natural interiors and makes a small room feel bigger. Walnut is deeper and richer, warm and a little dramatic, and it's the finish most of our wood customers choose. See them side by side: oak ottoman beds and walnut ottoman beds.
