We're Glad you Asked...
Is it real walnut?
Yes. It's real walnut veneer on a stable core, so you get genuine walnut grain and colour with far less timber. All our wood is FSC-certified.
Does walnut change colour over time?
Walnut mellows slightly with light, softening to a warmer tone over the years. It's sealed with a durable finish, so it stays easy to wipe clean.
Walnut or oak: which should I choose?
Walnut is darker and richer, and suits deeper colour schemes. Oak is lighter and brighter, and suits pale, airy rooms. Come and see both side by side in our Swiss Cottage and Chelsea showrooms.
Which walnut ottoman bed has the most storage?
Max Wood: 35cm of storage as standard, or 40cm with Max+. Air Wood has 33cm and sits on slim legs.
Can I have a walnut ottoman bed with a fabric headboard?
Yes. Any of our fabric headboards fits both Air Wood and Max Wood, and it's one of the most popular ways customers order.
What sizes do walnut ottoman beds come in?
Single to emperor, including European sizes.
How much does a walnut ottoman bed cost?
Air Wood in walnut starts from £1,850 for a single, and Max Wood in walnut from £1,950. Delivery and installation are included in the price (terms apply). Choose your size, headboard and options online to see the exact price.
Is walnut more expensive than oak?
Yes. Walnut costs £200 more than oak in every size, reflecting the cost of the timber. Everything else about the bed is the same.
How do I look after a walnut ottoman bed?
Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe up spills with a damp cloth and dry straight away. Avoid harsh cleaners and silicone polishes, and keep the bed out of strong direct sunlight to slow its natural mellowing.
How easy is it to lift the base?
Very easy. We match the gas struts to your mattress weight: 900N for around 30kg, 1,150N for around 50kg and 1,350N for 65kg and above. The base opens easily and closes gently.
Can I get an electric lift?
Yes, on both Air Wood and Max Wood. It opens the base at the touch of a button, and it's ideal for super king and emperor sizes or heavier mattresses.
Can the base open from the side?
Yes. Choose end or side opening when you order. Side opening is useful if the foot of the bed is close to a wall or other furniture.
How long does delivery take?
Each bed is made to order in Nottingham and delivered in 6 to 8 weeks. Express delivery from 4 weeks is also available.
Will it fit up my stairs?
Almost always. The bed arrives in sections and our own team assembles it in your bedroom, so narrow stairs and tight landings are rarely a problem.
Do you sell mattresses too?
Yes. You can add one of our mattresses when you choose your bed, or use your own. Any standard mattress fits.
Can I try it at home?
Yes. Every bed comes with a 60-day home trial, so you can live with it before you decide.
What our customers have to say
Why Choose a Walnut Ottoman Bed
Walnut is the darkest and richest of the woods we use, with a natural grain that runs from deep chocolate to warm honey tones. It brings depth to a bedroom without making it feel heavy, and it hides everyday marks better than paler woods. Lift the base and there's room for bedding, suitcases and everything else you'd rather not see, so the room stays calm and clear.

Real walnut, responsibly made
Each bed is real walnut veneer bonded to a stable core. You see and touch genuine walnut grain, the panels stay flat and true through the seasons, and each bed uses a fraction of the timber a solid walnut frame would. All our wood is FSC-certified, and Furl is a certified B Corp.
Because it's real wood, no two beds are identical. The grain, figure and colour vary from panel to panel, which is exactly what makes walnut worth having.
Walnut storage bed, ottoman bed or lift-up bed?
They're the same thing. Whether you call it a walnut storage bed, a walnut bed with storage or a walnut ottoman bed, it's a bed whose base lifts up so the whole space underneath becomes storage. We call ours ottoman beds.
Storage you can actually use
We measure storage depth as usable space: from the floor of the base to the top of the slats. The whole area under the mattress opens in one go, with no drawers to pull out and no gap to leave around the bed. At 40cm, a cabin suitcase lies flat inside with room to spare. That makes an ottoman bed ideal for smaller bedrooms, where floor space matters more than anything.
An easy, gentle lift
The base lifts on gas struts matched to the weight of your mattress, so it opens easily and closes gently. Choose opening from the end or the side, depending on where the bed sits in the room. For larger sizes or heavier mattresses, an electric lift opens the base at the touch of a button.
Walnut or fabric headboard
Match the frame with a walnut headboard for a clean, architectural look, or choose any of our fabric headboards. A fabric headboard on a walnut base is one of the most popular ways customers order: the soft upholstery against the dark grain looks wonderful, and it's comfortable to lean on when you're reading in bed. You can also leave the headboard off entirely and fix the bed against a panelled or painted wall.
Styling a walnut bed
Walnut works beautifully with warm whites, soft greens, terracotta and deep blues. Pair it with natural linen bedding, brass or bronze lighting and a wool rug for a calm, grown-up room. In a bright room it adds warmth; in a darker room it feels cosy and enveloping.
Built to be used every day
Every bed has a 2cm-thick frame, so it takes up barely more floor space than the mattress itself. Orthopaedic slats support the mattress properly, and any standard mattress fits. These are beds designed to be slept on and opened every day, for years.
Sizes and dimensions
Walnut ottoman beds come in every size from single to emperor, including European sizes.
