Two British makers of handmade sofa beds, compared honestly: what each does best, who each one suits, and which is built to be your everyday bed.

Furl and Willow & Hall are often mentioned in the same breath. Both make sofa beds by hand in England, both sell direct, and both send free fabric swatches. Look closer and they are built for different buyers.

Willow & Hall is built around choice and value. It offers dozens of traditional shapes, a wide spread of arm, foot and cushion options, keen prices and quick turnaround. That suits a sofa that is a sofa most of the year, with a bed inside for the occasional guest, bought online from swatches.

A Furl sofa bed is an amazing bed first, then a sofa. It is designed to be your main bed, slept on every night if you need it to be. Think of a one-bedroom London flat where the living room is also the guest room, the home office and, some nights or every night, the bedroom. There the bed matters as much as the sofa. So the mattress is as deep as a proper bed's, you pull a strap on the backrest and the whole sofa unfurls into a bed in about three seconds flat, so making it up each night is no chore, the size is cut to the room, and most people lie on it in a showroom before they buy.

The Mattress

This is the biggest difference, and the one guests notice. Willow & Hall's sofa beds come with a 14cm open-sprung mattress as standard, with 14cm pocket-sprung and 12cm memory foam upgrades. Furl's core sofa beds take a mattress up to 18cm deep, a depth you would expect on an everyday bed rather than a spare one. We offer four different mattresses, each very different from the other, because a choice of comfort means you sleep longer and better, and your guests are much happier. Come and try them.

Those extra centimetres are what stop you feeling the frame beneath you, and they are why a Furl sofa bed can be your everyday bed rather than an occasional one. If you, a partner or a regular guest will sleep on it night after night, mattress depth matters more than anything else on this list.

Seeing It First

We believe you should sit on a sofa and lie on the bed before you buy. Our Swiss Cottage and Chelsea showrooms are open at weekends as well as weekdays, and you don't need an appointment, although you can book one if you'd like. Willow & Hall's Twickenham showroom works by appointment on weekdays and, at the time of writing, is closed.

If you can't get to London, both brands send fabric swatches free. Furl also offers a 60-day home trial on made-to-order pieces, so you can live with it before deciding.

Delivery and Timing

Willow & Hall is quicker, at 4–5 weeks for made-to-order pieces against our 6–8 weeks. If you need it sooner, our express option moves you to the front of the queue for £95, often around 4 weeks, and some models are in stock and can be with you within 7 days.

Delivery itself is included with Furl: our own team brings your sofa bed in sections and builds it in the room you choose. Willow & Hall offers a similar white-glove service, charged from £85, or £100 inside the London congestion zone.

Guarantees and Returns

Willow & Hall offers long guarantees: 25 years on the wooden frame, against warping or breakage, and 10 years on sofa bed mattresses. The small print doesn’t mention the sofa bed mechanism, and the guarantees apply only to the original buyer in mainland UK. Furl guarantees the mechanism, the part that works hardest in a sofa bed, for 5 years, the upholstery for 2 years and the mattress for 1 year.

On returns, Willow & Hall gives you 14 days from delivery with a full refund. Furl gives you 60 days to live with it; if it isn't right, we collect it and refund you, less a £195 collection charge.

Our sofa beds are also modular. Arms and components unclip, so a part can be replaced in minutes at home rather than the whole piece going back to a factory.

Delivered in Sections

Getting a sofa bed into a London flat is half the battle. Every Furl sofa bed arrives in sections, so winding staircases, narrow doorways and tight passageways aren't a problem. Our own team carries it in, builds it in the room you choose, shows you how it works and takes all the packaging away. And if it really won't go in, you can ask for a refund (terms apply).

Willow & Hall also delivers to a room of your choice, up to a maximum of two flights of stairs.

Price

Willow & Hall is considerably cheaper. Its range starts at around £500 for a single-seat chair bed, with popular models from around £1,200. Furl sofa beds start at around £1,900. The difference goes into the deeper mattress, the range of real bed sizes, the free delivery and build, and a mechanism that opens into a bed with one pull, in about three seconds.

Sizing and Made to Measure

Willow & Hall sofa beds open to single, small double, double and king. The Furl Cambio comes in five sizes, from a love seat with an 80cm single bed to a super king, and every one opens to a full 200cm length. If none of them fits your room, ask us about a bespoke size. Willow & Hall offers a good choice of arm, foot and back styles, but does not make bespoke sizes.

Storage Beds

Both brands make ottoman storage beds. Willow & Hall does not publish the storage depth of its ottomans. Ours is published on every model: up to 35cm as standard on Max, or 40cm with the Plus option, measured as usable space from the base to the top of the slats.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Willow & Hall if budget comes first, the bed will be used a few nights a year, you need it within a month, or a long frame guarantee is what gives you peace of mind.

Choose Furl if it needs to be your main bed or will be slept on most nights, you want a mattress that feels like a real bed, you need a super king or a bespoke size, or you would like to try it in a London showroom first and have it delivered and built for you.
