A flat-pack sofa bed delivered tomorrow, or a handmade one built in your room: an honest comparison of Furl and Swyft, and which suits everyday sleeping.

Furl and Swyft both set out to make a sofa bed you would actually want to sleep on, and both say you can sleep on it every night. They go about it in very different ways.

Swyft is built for speed and ease. Its sofa beds arrive in boxes, often the next day, and click together without tools. Most models come in one size, and the prices are keen. Furl is built for the bed. A Furl sofa bed is an amazing bed first, then a sofa, designed to be your main bed if you need it to be. It is made to order by hand in our own Nottingham workshop, comes in five sizes, and our team brings it in sections and builds it in your room.

The Bed

Swyft's Model 04 makes its bed from the sofa itself. Lift the seat, fold out the hidden legs and slide it forward on its castors, then the back pivots down to form the other half. You sleep on the seat, which is 17cm deep, and the back: a 135 x 190cm double. A Furl sofa bed has a separate mattress inside that unfolds with the frame. Open a Furl Cambio Medium, a little narrower as a sofa at 196cm, and you get 140 x 200cm, almost a king size. And that is just one of our five sizes: there are two smaller, down to a love seat with an 80cm single, and two bigger, with 160cm and 180cm (super king) beds. Every one is 200cm (6'6") long, the length of a king or super king bed, so taller sleepers aren't hanging off the end.

Because Swyft's bed is the sofa, you sleep on what you sit on, and there's no choosing the mattress. We offer four different mattresses, each very different from the other, because a choice of comfort means you sleep longer and better, and your guests are much happier. Come and try them.

Delivery and Getting It In

This is Swyft's great strength. Order before 3.30pm on a weekday and many models arrive the next day, in flat-packed boxes that go up narrow stairs easily and click together without tools. You pay for delivery by weight, and assembly costs an extra £49.

A Furl sofa bed is made to order, so it takes 6–8 weeks, or around 4 with express delivery. If you need one sooner, some models are in stock and can be with you within 7 days. It also arrives in sections, so winding staircases, narrow doorways and tight passageways aren't a problem, but you don't lift a finger. Our own team carries it in, builds it in the room you choose, shows you how it works and takes all the packaging away. It's included in the price. And if it really won't go in, you can ask for a refund (terms apply).

If You Change Your Mind

Swyft gives you 100 days to return, with a full refund less the delivery fee, and your first exchange is free. That is generous. Furl gives you a 60-day home trial on made-to-order pieces; if it isn't right, we collect it and refund you, less a £195 collection charge.

Guarantees

Swyft guarantees the frame for 15 years and the fabric for 2. Read the small print, though: the frame guarantee covers the internal structure, and the terms don't mention the sofa bed mechanism. Furl guarantees the mechanism, the part that works hardest in a sofa bed, for 5 years, the upholstery for 2 years and the mattress for 1 year.

Our sofa beds are also modular. Arms and components unclip, so a part can be replaced in minutes at home rather than the whole piece going back to a factory.

Seeing It First

Swyft has a store in Angel, Islington, and some models are on show in John Lewis. Ours are in Swiss Cottage and on the King's Road in Chelsea, with every size and mattress to try, and you don't need an appointment, although you can book one if you'd like. Price

Swyft is usually cheaper. The Model 04 is £1,999 at full price and is often discounted, and its smaller models start at under £1,000. Furl sofa beds start at around £1,900, made to order in Britain, with delivery and a full build in your room included.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Swyft if you need it this week, you're happy to put it together yourself, a standard 3-seater with a double bed fits your room, or you want the longest window to return it.

Choose Furl if the bed is the point: it needs to be your main bed or will be slept on most nights, you want a choice of mattress and a full 200cm length, your room needs a different size or you want a super king, or you'd rather it arrived built, handmade in Britain by a B Corp.

Which sofa bed has the bigger bed, Furl or Swyft?
Furl. A Furl Cambio Medium opens to 140 x 200cm and our sizes go up to a 180cm super king, all 200cm long. Swyft's Model 04 3-seater opens to 135 x 190cm.

Does the Swyft Model 04 have a mattress?
No. The 17cm seat slides forward and the back folds down, and you sleep on the two together. A Furl sofa bed has a separate mattress, up to 18cm deep, with a choice of four.
