Home Decoration Tips From Furl's Experts
Real homes hold laundry baskets, dog toys, school bags, and a drawer that refuses to close. The polished clips you scroll past online skip all of that.
Here at Furl, we've spent nearly two decades designing furniture for real life in real homes. And the best home decoration tips we can give you all start from the same place: decorate for your lifestyle, not for the camera.
That matters more than ever. Pinterest data shows trends now evolve more than four times faster than they did seven years ago. Chasing them is exhausting. Building a home around how you actually live is calming, and it lasts.

Home interior decorating tips that work with your lifestyle, not against it
Before you pick a paint color or a sofa, ask yourself one honest question: what does my home need to do every day?
Your answer shapes everything else. Here are the four scenarios we see most often in our showrooms, and what works for each.
Do you have young children or pets?
Then durability comes first. A pale bouclé sofa and a muddy spaniel make a short story with a sad ending.
Choose performance fabrics designed for exactly this life stage. Tightly woven fabrics like microfiber resist stains, shrug off claws, and wipe clean after juice spills. Interior designers reach for these fabrics whenever kids and pets share the home, because they combine style with genuine resilience.
A few practical rules we follow ourselves:
- Mid-tone colors hide everyday marks far better than very light or very dark shades.
- Textured weaves disguise wear better than smooth, flat fabrics.
- Removable, washable covers earn their keep within the first month.
- Rounded edges and sturdy finishes survive toddlers and tails alike.
? Tip: Order our free fabric samples and test them at home. Rub them, spill on them, let the dog sit on them. Our durable fabrics guide walks you through exactly what to look for.
Do you have a lot of stuff?
Most of us do. Our founder David Norman puts it simply: keep your clutter, get better storage.
You don't need to throw away the memories, the seasonal wardrobe, or the Christmas tree. You need somewhere clever to put them.
Start with the biggest wins:
- Storage beds turn the dead space under your mattress into a hidden room. Ours swallow full suitcases, ironing boards, vacuums, and entire seasonal wardrobes.
- Wall shelving uses vertical space that most rooms waste. Floor space stays clear, and your favorite books and objects become the decor.
- Bookcases with closed lower cabinets give you display up top and hidden storage below.
A tidy surface does something real for how a room feels. Storage furniture is decoration, in the truest sense, because a calm room always looks better than a cluttered one.
Do you need rooms to do more than one thing?
City living rarely gives you a spare room for every purpose. The home office is also the guest room. The dining table is also the desk.
You're in good company. The multifunctional furniture market reached 15.9 billion US dollars in 2024, driven largely by urban dwellers in dense cities like London making smaller spaces work harder.
The trick is choosing pieces that do both jobs well:
- A sofa bed designed for everyday use means your guest room stays a proper living room, and your guests still sleep beautifully.
- An extending table works as a desk for two by day and a dinner table for eight by night.
- A coffee table that rises to dining height gives a small living room a second life.
We've written a full guide on this in our multifunctional furniture article, including how to choose pieces that never feel like a compromise.
Do you often host get-togethers or parties?
Wonderful. Your home should make hosting easy rather than stressful.
That starts with stain-resistant choices everywhere a glass of red wine can reach:
- Performance fabrics on sofas and dining chairs.
- Wipeable paint finishes in hallways, kitchens, and dining areas.
- Washable rugs, or rugs in forgiving patterns and mid tones.
- Sealed or laminated table surfaces that survive hot dishes and dripped candles.
When your surfaces can handle a party, you relax. And a relaxed host makes a better party than any styled tablescape.
? Tip: Our durable fabrics guide and our guide to paint colors cover the most resilient options in detail.

Once your home works for your lifestyle, these four principles make it beautiful. They've held true for the full 19 years we've been designing furniture.
1. Create a cohesive flow between rooms. Repeat two or three elements throughout your home. A wood tone, a metal finish, an accent color. Your rooms can each have their own personality while still feeling like one home. This is commonly overlooked, and it makes the single biggest difference to how "finished" a home feels.
2. Choose complementary colors, then stop. Pick a calm base, one or two supporting shades, and a single accent. Restraint reads as confidence. A limited palette also makes future purchases easier, because everything already goes together.
3. Let furniture earn its floor space. Every large piece should give you something back. Comfort, storage, or flexibility, and ideally two of the three. A storage bed, an everyday sofa bed, an extending table. Beautiful and practical belong in the same sentence.
4. Layer soft furnishings last. Cushions, throws, curtains, and rugs bring warmth and absorb sound. They're also the cheapest, easiest layer to change with the seasons, so save your experimentation budget here rather than on the big pieces.
Should you always follow interior home decorating trends?
No. That's the honest answer.
Start with what the space needs to do, then borrow from trends only where they serve that purpose. Designers are already moving this way. As one 2026 trend report puts it, homes are shifting toward comfort, warmth, and authenticity. In their words: "your house should feel like you. Not a catalog."
"The pieces people are drawn to now are the ones that look better the longer you live with them." — Decorilla, 2026 trend report
A useful way to judge any trend is to sort it into one of two camps:
- Longstanding trends solve a real problem. Built-in storage, natural materials, and multifunctional furniture have stayed popular for decades because life keeps demanding them.
- Short-lived trends exist for the photo. Those sculptural, ultra-puffy sofas that filled feeds recently are already losing momentum, precisely because they're fun to look at and awkward to live with.
⚠️ A simple test before any trend purchase: imagine the piece in your home in five years, covered in normal life. If it still earns its place, buy it. If it only works styled and spotless, skip it.
Start small, and start with how you live
You don't need to redecorate everything this weekend. Pick one room. Answer the lifestyle questions above. Fix the thing that frustrates you most, whether that's clutter with nowhere to go, a sofa that can't survive the kids, or a room that needs to do two jobs. Then move to the next room when you're ready. Bit by bit, your home becomes calmer, more comfortable, and genuinely yours.
