A living room is, by a long way, the hardest-working room in most British homes. It hosts breakfast, work calls, homework, board games, children's toys, three half-read books, a blanket you only use on Tuesdays, and - eventually - you, trying to unwind at the end of the day.

The mess isn't a failing. It's just what happens when one room has to do five things. But it does exact a cost. Your outer space reflects your inner mood, and a room that's constantly low-level cluttered keeps part of your brain permanently switched on. You can't quite settle. You can't quite breathe out.

The usual fix is to buy more storage - a sideboard, a media unit, a basket under the coffee table. Which works, until you realise you've filled the room with more furniture to look at. A better answer: let your sofa do the work.

That's what the Mellow is for.

Most sofas with storage have a tell. A chunky base. Boxy arms. Something about the silhouette that gives away the secret underneath. Mellow doesn't. The arms are softly curved - a single sweeping line from back to front that makes the sofa feel lower and calmer. The seat cushions are deep and overstuffed. The back cushions are loose and full. It reads as a modern, considered, living-room sofa. Nothing about it shouts "I hide things."

Underneath the Mellow are two generous pull-out drawers - one on each side, sized to match the sofa. No cushion-lifting, no mechanism to wrestle with - you walk up, slide a drawer out, put things away, close it. Five seconds.

Two drawers rather than one is deliberate: if someone's sitting on the sofa on one side, you can still open the drawer on the other. Quietly useful on a Sunday afternoon when someone's having a nap.

What actually fits inside

Board games. Kids' toys. Extra pillows and throws. Seasonal blankets, craft supplies, hobby kit. Out-of-season clothes, spare cushion covers, holiday decorations that won't see daylight for months. A yoga mat and a set of dumbbells. A full-size suitcase - yes, really. Our customers often bring one to the showroom to check it fits. Spoiler: it always does.

Who the Mellow is really for

We designed the Mellow around three specific moments - three kinds of customer who come into our showrooms with the same quiet frustration about their living room.

What they share is the instinct that feeling calm at home shouldn't require you to own less, or to be tidier than you are. It just requires furniture that hides the evidence when you need it to.

Why we built it this way

Most storage sofas on the UK market solve the storage problem at the expense of the sofa problem. Adding storage almost always compromises comfort - a shallower seat, a firmer base, a backrest that sits slightly wrong. Or they look like storage first and sofas second: boxy, industrial, the mechanism visible from across the room.

The Mellow was designed the other way round. We started with the sofa - the proportions, the cushion depth, the curve of the arm - and then engineered the drawer to sit invisibly underneath. The seat depth is proper (60cm), the back height is generous (94cm), the cushion fill is chosen for sink rather than bounce. You sit down and you don't get back up in a hurry.

Every Mellow is hand-built in our Nottingham workshop by the same team that has been making storage beds and sofa beds for our customers since 2007. It's delivered and installed by our own team, not a third-party courier. And because we keep spares for every component we've ever made, a Furl sofa can always be repaired rather than replaced.

There's a quiet sustainability story in that - a well-made sofa that lasts twenty years costs less, in every sense, than two cheaper sofas that last ten.
