A sofa bed, by contrast, doesn’t conceal a mattress. Instead, it becomes the mattress.
Rather than hiding a metal frame, the structure transforms – usually by folding flat or reconfiguring the cushions to create a sleeping surface. It’s simpler, but it’s not always the most comfort-friendly.
This is because the comfort depends entirely on the design: without a separate mattress, the seat cushions are the bed – which can be a strength or a weakness. When well-made, the result is a consistent, supportive surface that suits short stays or quick naps.
But - not all sofa beds are created equal. Many are built with occasional sleep in mind: a convenient place for guests, but not something you’d want to sleep on every night. At Furl, we approach things differently.
We design sleeper sofas that act like proper beds, engineered to deliver comfort night after night. That means thick, supportive mattresses (up to 18cm deep), no central bars or dips, and easy, intuitive mechanisms that make daily use effortless.
So while we use the term “sofa bed” (because that’s what our customers search for), what we actually sell are sleeper sofas. And that distinction matters, especially if - like us - sleep quality isn’t something you’re willing to compromise on.
