As life slowly returns to normal, we’ve been thinking about how things might start to adjust at home. As we return to work, our bedroom will become a place of absolute rest upon our return. So here are all of our Feng Shui bedroom tips to help you feel more relaxed at home.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is a traditional Chinese practice which uses energy forces to harmonise individuals with their surrounding environment.

The Bagua energy map has “eight areas”, each of which translates to a different part of your life. Each area has corresponding shapes and colours, and your health is at the centre of it.

You can superimpose this map onto the floor plan of your home.

How to Feng Shui your bedroom

How to Feng Shui your bedroom

When applying Feng Shui to your home, your bedroom should be high on your to-do list. After all, it’s where you spend most of your time.

Bedroom Feng Shui starts with getting your bed in the correct position, also known as the commanding position (you can read more about this in the must-follow rules below).

It’s also essential to have space on both sides of the bed. This allows for two bedside tables, which shows that you have made space for your partner or future partner.

The bedside tables don’t have to be matching, but they should be of a similar size. If you have the room, leave at least 60cms of walking space on each side of the bed.

The benefits of a Feng Shui bedroom

By cleaning your windows, dusting your ornaments and keeping clutter to a minimum (all parts of Feng Shui), you will feel more relaxed in your bedroom.

For a more peaceful start to your day, take the time every morning to make your bed. That energy will carry you through the whole day until it is time to retreat to your bedroom again at night.

The must-follow rules of bedroom Feng Shui

Following the commanding position is one of the most important principles of Feng Shu. You are in command of your life when you are in the commanding position.

This is when you will receive the most positive energy and the best opportunities. So make sure to apply this principle to the location of your bed.

You should be able to see the door from your bed, but it must not be in line with it. If your bedroom is too small to achieve this, position a mirror so you can still see the door from your bed.

Not having your bed directly opposite the door will make you feel safer and more secure whilst sleeping.

If you can avoid it, try not to position your bed underneath a window, particularly if it’s on the ground floor, which can emphasise a feeling of insecurity.

You must have a headboard, which must be against the wall. A solid headboard fastened to the bed creates harmony and stability.

The must-follow rules of bedroom Feng Shui

  • Limit electronics – try to reduce the number of devices in your bedroom. Charge your phone in another room and avoid having a TV in the bedroom, as electronics emit magnetic fields that can disturb sleep.

  • Have calming and serene artwork – choose tranquil, uplifting pieces to create a relaxing environment. Place artwork opposite the bed so it’s the first thing you see when you wake up.

  • Use symmetry in your bedroom layout – while items don’t need to match perfectly, they should be similar in size. For example, if you place a lamp on one bedside table, add one to the other to enhance balance and harmony.

  • Get as much natural light as possible – avoid blocking windows with shutters or furniture. Natural light boosts serotonin levels and helps improve your mood throughout the day.

  • Avoid having office furniture in your bedroom – if working from home is unavoidable, try to screen off or tidy your workspace before going to sleep to maintain a restful environment.
Feng Shui colours for your bedroom

Feng Shui colours for your bedroom

The best colours for your bedroom are soothing, such as blues, greens or earthy tones. All white bedrooms are also serene and calming. But if you fancy something a little bolder, then red is the colour of passion. It may feel too energising if you struggle to fall asleep.

How we can help you create a Feng Shui bedroom

At Furl, we make furniture to help minimise clutter. We have storage beds that are lifted off the ground to allow for airflow whilst minimising the clutter in your bedroom. Our Simplicity Bed is perfect for storing your additional bed linen, pillows and towels.

Most importantly, we have a vast range of solid upholstered headboards that can be ordered for one of our beds or your existing bed. Each of our headboard designs can be made as an integrated headboard, which means that it attaches to the bed, helping to create harmony and stability.

It is said that linens are one of the best materials for any furniture in your bedroom. We work with the softest linens from Romo, an exquisite cotton-linen blend available in a vast range of blues, greens and earthy tones.
