Do you know the difference between an ottoman bed and a storage bed with drawers? While they both have storage, there are some significant differences between them.

In this blog post, we look at why the ottoman-style opening is a better option than the drawer system.

What is an Ottoman Bed?

You may have heard the term ottoman referring to a small footstool or a cushioned low seating area. However, when we’re talking about storage beds, ‘ottoman’ refers to the lifting mechanism.

We have three mechanisms and six bed bases for you to choose from in our range of deep ottoman beds. With each of our bed bases offers a slightly different amount of storage space, but each of them opening the same way.

The whole mechanism of the bed lifts, to allow you easy access to the storage space underneath. Best of all, you don’t have to remove any of your bedding or mattress to access it.

This ottoman bed has a whopping 33cm of storage, that’s over 1000 cubic litres!

What is a Storage Bed with Drawers?

You usually need a divan base to add storage space in the form of drawers. A divan is a bed base with a flat top, often upholstered in basic fabric. Of course, the larger the base, the larger the drawers, hence why they are usually quite chunky.

The size of the drawers can vary depending on the specific bed model, with dimensions typically around 53cm in depth and 22cm in height. The convenience of having storage directly under the bed makes storage beds with drawers a practical choice for many bedrooms.

What Makes An Ottoman Bed Superior?

There are several reasons why the ottoman mechanism is better than a drawer system. Here are just a few.

What Makes An Ottoman Bed Superior?
  • The opening mechanism on an ottoman bed is easy to lift (we can only speak for our mechanism here, not for other manufacturers). With a drawer storage bed, the drawers closest to the end of the bed your head rests at are usually half-hidden by bedside tables. Meaning you’ve got to move the side tables before you can access the drawers.

  • The opening mechanism allows you to take advantage of as much storage space as possible. (Again, we can only speak for our bespoke storage bed bases). The drawers in some beds are quite small, but with an ottoman bed, you can access the entire bed’s footprint.

  • When it comes to a divan with drawers, the larger the base, the more space you have. In theory, this is the same for ottoman bed bases too. However, ottomans provide more space as sections of it aren’t taken up by the drawers themselves.

  • An ottoman opening is likely to last longer than the drawer system too. Bed drawers are usually constructed from a wooden frame that is light enough to pull in and out. They are unfortunately unlikely to stand the test of time compared to the steel mechanism and gas pistons on an ottoman bed.

Do Gas Lift Beds Run Out of Gas?

The gas lift pistons, or struts, on our ottoman beds, are strong enough to raise the mattress and the slats underneath it so you can easily access the storage underneath.

Just like a bicycle pump, these struts contain gas and oil. The gas doesn’t deplete over time, so if the mechanism on your bed isn’t working quite as well as it used to, it’s more likely that wear and tear have led to a loss of pressure.

If you notice that your gas lift bed is not functioning properly, such as not lifting smoothly or struggling to stay in the raised position, contact the manufacturer. They can assess the issue and recommend appropriate solutions, such as replacing the gas springs if necessary.

Do All Ottoman Beds Have Gas Struts?

Not all ottoman beds have gas struts. Whilst gas struts are commonly used in ottoman beds to assist with the lifting, other mechanisms are available.

Some ottoman beds use alternatives, such as hinges, pistons, or springs, to make lifting the mattress easier allowing you to access the storage space underneath. These mechanisms can vary depending on the design and manufacturer of the bed.

It’s essential to check the specifications or consult with the retailer to determine the specific mechanisms used on the bed you’re interested in before you invest.

Furl beds are designed with cutting-edge gas pistons that revolutionize the way you interact with your bed. These powerful gas pistons are a game-changer in convenience. Imagine effortlessly lifting your mattress with just one hand - that's the magic of Furl beds. With these innovative gas pistons, your bed opens and closes smoothly, adding a touch of elegance to your daily routine.

Ottoman Bed vs Storage Bed with Drawers

Everybody knows that Ottoman beds are the kings of storage, offering up to 4 times more storage space than a traditional 4-drawer divan bed. Plus they feature a simple lifting mechanism that allows you to utilise all the space under your bed for storing items such as clothes and bedding. To put it simply, Ottoman beds are perfect for those looking to add a touch of luxury and elegance to their bedroom whilst maximising the potential of their bedroom.

Storage beds with drawers, also known as divan beds, come with 2 or 4 drawers within the base, ideal for storing smaller items like books and shoes. These beds offer a balance between functionality and aesthetics, providing a neat bedroom environment while adding a touch of sophistication with luxurious fabric upholstery. From TV storage beds to guest beds with storage, there are various designs available to suit different needs and preferences, making them versatile options for any bedroom.

While both beds are excellent choices, it ultimately comes down to what you want to get from your bedroom and what style best aligns with your bedroom decor.
