Care & Moving Guide

Because we build our sofa beds in sections, moving one is far simpler than you'd expect — as you'll see below, most moves barely need it taken apart at all.

See how easily it goes together — and apart

Watch a Furl sofa bed assemble from the bare mechanism up — run it backwards and you have the disassembly, step for step.

Every Furl sofa bed is built in your room, in sections, by our own installation team. That same modular design works in reverse when you need to move it — through a tight doorway, up a stairwell, or on to your next home.

How far you take it apart depends on the move. There are two levels — and whichever you choose, the step on locking the mechanism applies to both.

For most moves: just take the arms off

In the majority of cases, removing the two arms is all you need. It slims the footprint enough to clear most doorways and corners — and it reveals a good lifting point on the mechanism, making the whole thing far easier to carry.

Removing an arm

Lift the arm away from the mechanism. Arms can sit tight, so rock it gently from side to side — around 2cm at a time — until it eases up and lifts free. Repeat with the second arm.

The kickboard stays on. It remains attached to the mechanism throughout — wrap it in plastic to keep it protected while moving.

With the arms off, lock the mechanism (see below) and you're ready to move.

For a more complete move

For very tight access, long-distance moves, or storage, you can strip it back further by also removing the seat, the inside back and the outside back. Keep a second pair of hands close — the steel mechanism is heavy.

Remove the seat cushions

Lift the seat cushions to reach the Velcro fastening underneath, release it, and take the cushions away.

Remove the inside back

Open the mechanism halfway to access the fixings. Undo the bolts securing the back to the mechanism — two bolts on each side — and keep them safe. Close the mechanism again, then lift the inside back away.

Remove the outside back

With the arms off and the bolts out, lift the outside back piece away from the mechanism.

The kickboard still stays on. Even for a full strip-down, leave the kickboard attached to the mechanism and wrap it in plastic to protect it.

The most important step — every move

Tie the mechanism closed before you move it

On both sides of the closed mechanism, tie the inner section to the outer frame so the mechanism cannot open while it is being carried or transported. Anything that holds it firmly will do — a length of string, some wire, or even an old sock tied tight. A mechanism that springs open mid-move is the single biggest risk — to the furniture and to the people lifting it. Do this whether you've taken off just the arms or stripped it back fully. Do not skip this.

Putting it back together? Work in reverse — release the mechanism locks, refit the outside back, replace the seat cushions and re-fasten the Velcro, then (if removed) open the mechanism halfway to re-bolt the inside back, two bolts each side, before closing. Finally, slide the arms back on.

A few things worth knowing

It's built on steel, so it's heavy. Move the mechanism with two people, use the lifting point the arms reveal, and lift with your legs.

Keep the cushions flat. Store seat and back cushions lying flat rather than wedged upright, so they hold their shape in transit.

Storage beds are different. Our storage beds come apart into ten or eleven sections — ask us for the specific guide if you're moving one of those.
