2017 Interior Design Trend Predictions

We just still cannot seem to believe that 2017 has finally arrived. However, we have to start embracing it. Otherwise before we know it, this year will be over and we won’t have even begun updating our interiors. So here are our 2017 interior design trend predictions. Which ones do you think will fall, and which ones will fly? Let’s get updating your homes.

2017 Interior Design Trend Predictions

Upholstered Headboards

Now, all of us at Furl cannot tell you how happy this makes us. Where is the jumping around emoji when you need one?! We have been in love with the upholstered headboard for years and years. Luckily for us, and for you as they are just beautiful, this is one of the most popular 2017 interior design trend predictions. An upholstered headboard can make a huge difference to a room, and really turns the style into hotel chic. We think the larger the headboard, the better. With a large headboard, you don’t need to start thinking about what artwork to hang above it, as the headboard quite simply becomes the artwork.

2017 Interior Design Trend Predictions

Deep buttoned headboards upholstered in Linen are a well-liked choice. However our customers are in love with our Mondrian headboard, which looks it’s best upholstered in a luxurious velvet. (We think so anyway!) There is actually a wall mounted version of the Mondrian in Velvet at our showroom right now, so pop down when you have a spare minute.

Marble

No interior would be complete without a little bit of glam, and marble is certainly glam. You might be thinking, I can’t afford marble and you are totally right. It can get a little bit expensive, but you can still introduce marble into your home no matter what your budget. For those looking to splash the cash, nothing shouts glamorous more than a marble bathroom. They look incredibly luxurious, which suits so many London interiors, but don’t be shocked by the price. For those who are not quite for breaking the bank, marble wallpaper is a fantastic alternative and looks so realistic. B&Q version is available at a very reasonable price. For you crafty lot, spend a couple of pounds on some marble samples from a stone supplier. Then add dots to the bottom of them and turn them into coasters to scatter around your home. This is a very cheap, yet very clever way of adding marble into your home.

Cork

Yes you read that correctly – cork is making a comeback. Perhaps one of the weirdest 2017 interior design trend predictions, we never thought would return. We are not quite sure how to feel about this either, but we do have a few ideas where we think it could work. Children’s interiors have become much more interactive over the recent years, in order to help them become more expressive. Why not use cork wallpaper over a small section of wall in your child’s bedroom to create a feature notice board. They can pin up their drawings, party invitations, badges and anything they may collect on their travels. For a more grown up suggestion for the comeback of the cork, quirky coffee table and lamps could really work within an industrial styled interior. Try painting the cork for a different look, which adds that element of fun and interest. Champagne cork stools have been popping up on a few homeware sites, so keep your eyes peeled. They would certainly provide a talking point around the dinner party table.

2017 interior design trend predictions

Green

Pantone’s colour of the year is Greenery. Inspired by nature, this shade of green is like no other green we have seen before. With so many London homes and apartments with very limited outdoor space, if any at all, we are craving a little bit more outdoors in our lives. Described by pantone as a ‘tangy yellow-green’, we think the only way to introduce this colour into your homes is through foliage itself. As it perhaps might be a bit bold on the walls. Having said that, there are lots of nature inspired prints circulating the interiors market. If you are the sort of person that perhaps might not be able to keep a plant alive, this might be a really lovely, subtle way of introducing foliage into your home.

2017 interior design trend predictions

At the end of the year, we shall certainly look back over our 2017 interior design trend predictions to see which ones really took off. Do you think any of our predicted trends will take over our home interiors? Which one would you chose to redecorate your home with? We really hope to see more upholstered headboards and would love to see yours. Tag us in your Instagram posts using @furl.home and use #furlheadboard so we can see which design you picked for yours.

New year new you. Let’s get fit!

Not sure about you, but we welcomed the new year with a few bubbles, laughter, family and friends. Actually perhaps a few more than just a few bubbles. So first of all, a huge Happy New Year to the lot of you! This year is all about you. New year new you and all. So we thought we might share our favourite recipes for keeping fit in January. Of course helping to shed all of that extra christmas weight.

At our London Showroom we have a fantastic table called Allwood. It is actually perfect for times like Christmas when you need a little extra dining space. Despite being a coffee table it actually extends to seat 8 people. However, when the festive period is over and all of your family and friends go home, you can simply slide it back to a table for 4.

new year new you

The first day back in our Showroom gazing at this gorgeous Cement version got us thinking. This post is all about the new year new you. So how can we start to get fit? So we came up with this. If a salad looks beautiful, on a stylish table…how can you not want to eat it? Our cement Allwood would fantastically display these Ottenlenghi salads.

Pan-Fried Brussels Sprouts And Shallot With Pomegranate & Purple Basil Salad

We are pretty sure that you must be as sick as us of the brussels by now. They just seem to keep on coming, so here is the famous Ottenlenghi Brussels salad. So rich with colour and sticky sweet, we are pretty sure that even if you don’t like Brussels you will like this one. With this one, there is no need to waste any of those leftovers.

new year new you Method

‘Trim off the ends of the sprouts and cut them in two lengthways. Heat up a large wok or nonstick pan, and add two tablespoons of oil. Fry half the sprouts on high heat for about four minutes, until nicely golden brown all over but still quite crunchy. Transfer to a mixing bowl and keep somewhere warm. Add more oil to the pan and repeat with the remaining sprouts.

Add two tablespoons of oil to the pan and fry the shallots as you did the sprouts, for four to six minutes. Add to the sprout bowl. Add the maple syrup, lemon zest, molasses and remaining oil to the still warm vegetables. Add half the pomegranate seeds and half the basil, season generously and toss to mix.

Serve warm or at room temperature, with the remaining pomegranate seeds and basil sprinkled on top’.

For the full recipe visit the Ottenlenghi website – our favourite food go to.

French Beans With Shiitake Mushrooms and Nutmeg Salad

Sticking to the wintery theme, we thought you might like to also try this Nutmeg wonder. After all, green salads most certainly do not have to be boring.

new year new you

New Year New You Method

‘Fill a medium saucepan with plenty of unsalted water and bring to a boil. Drop in the beans and blanch for four minutes. Drain, refresh and set aside in a sieve to dry completely.

Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and half a teaspoon of salt, and sauté over a high heat for about a minute, stirring the whole time. Reduce heat to low and cook for five minutes more, stirring occasionally. You want the onions soft, sweet and just turning golden brown. Add remaining oil, garlic, mushrooms, nutmeg and pepper; cook on medium heat for another four minutes, until the mushrooms are golden. Remove from the heat and mix in the beans. Season to taste. Pile on a serving dish and sprinkle with chervil. Serve warm or at room temperature’.

For the full recipe visit the Ottenlenghi website – I don’t even like mushrooms, and even I like the sound of this one!

Good luck with your ‘New Year New You’ programme. Let’s get fit together!

6 Sleeping Tips for Christmas Eve

The excitement of Christmas is really starting to build, and the big day is getting oh so much closer. In complete style, we continue our advent countdown with a few sleeping tips for the run up to the big day itself. Not sure about you, but we still get a few butterflies in our tummy awaiting Santa’s visit. So the Christmas Eve sleep we end up getting isn’t quite what we need for a full day of festivities. So here are a few sleeping tips to ensure you are on top form for the whole of Christmas day.

sleeping tips - advent

Taking advice for the experts when it comes to sleeping tips is certainly advisable. Even though Christmas Eve sleeping is a little bit different, their professional tips can still work wonders. So here is where we turn to the Sleep Foundation. Now lots of their tips are for general life, but some of those apply to those christmas eve jitters.

‘Wind down. Your body needs time to shift into sleep mode, so spend the last hour before bed doing a calming activity such as reading’.

We have a family tradition that every Christmas Eve we watch a film. But not just any film, it has to be a Christmas film! Perhaps this is the problem though – bright light stops you from sleeping easily. Do you have any Christmas family traditions? Tweet us at @Furl_Home. Perhaps reading might work for your family.

‘Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows. Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive’.

Ahem to that! Of course this sounds pretty self explanatory, however you wouldn’t believe the amount of people that ‘make do’. Get yourself out and testing new mattress if you don’t absolutely love getting into yours. We have a lovely selection of mattresses to test and choose from. We recommend knowing nothing about them before testing them. So come on down to our London Showroom and give them a go. Delivery for this year may have passed, but there is nothing wrong with getting yourself ready for next year.

advent sleeping tips

Thanks professionals, but now we come to those weird and wonderful ways of falling asleep. It would be boring if it wasn’t weird wouldn’t it. The Telegraph gives a few sleeping tips away that are just pure genius.

‘The 4-7-8 Technique – lightly touch the ridge of tissue behind your top front teeth with your tongue, exhale completely, and then adopt the following breathing pattern:
– Breathe in through your nose quietly for a count of 4
– Hold your breath for a count of seven
– Blow air out through your mouth for a count of 8, making a ‘whoosh’ sound
– Repeat the process three more times’

So here we have the new version of counting sheep. However this is actually the proven version so don’t knock it before you try it. They say it is particularly helpful in times of stress. Which of course what they are actually referring to is the stress behind the realisation that Santa might actually forget to visit you. The second tip that they give us is a little more funny. Just you wait…

‘Try staying awake’

I mean seriously? That is the absolute opposite of what we are trying to do! However, they are totally, completely right, it works! Two rules though – you are not allowed to move around or watch TV. This is the absolute dream for us as it makes the build up to Christmas Day so much more exciting.   Not forgetting the proven fact that Santa prefers to visit later to avoid you from hearing him! (Sorry).

advent sleeping tips

So following on from the weird and wonderful sleeping tips, now we just have the plain weird sleeping tips. Yes, we are going to try both of these on Christmas Eve this year. Don’t worry, we will aim to report back.

‘Eat a spoonful of raw organic honey before going to bed. Or for a savoury snack, eat two tbs of raw almond butter on celery’.

We did warn you that it was weird. But it could become the new family Christmas tradition or perhaps even part of a game. The winner gets the honey, and the loser gets the raw almond butter on celery. What have you got to lose?

‘Take a cold bath or shower before going to bed’.

Now this one seems more like the losers prize to us, but despite being weird, it works. Your body temperature lowers for sleeping, so this just speeds up the process a little.

Hopefully you will be able to get a good nights kip before this years Christmas Day.

advent sleeping tipsSo here’s to a happy 13th December. We thought we would leave you with a few bonus tips on the colours you should be using to decorate with. If you have a taupe or sand based home interior scheme, decorate with golds and white. If you have a grey scheme, decorate with silver, white and green. No matter what your home colour scheme, make sure you throw in lots of candles. This is what makes Christmas magical.

6 Interior Design Tips from the Professionals

We’re not quite sure if it is just us that are this excited that the advent countdown has finally begun!!!! (Yes we may have used a few too many exclamation marks there). However, Christmas is officially on its way. So to celebrate hitting the 6th day of advent and with the present hiding sorted, we wanted to share 6 interior design tips from the professionals. Of course, your home needs to be looking top notch for when the family poll up on Christmas day.

interior design tips

If you have already been browsing for a few interior design tips for a home renovation project, you may already have come across the lovely Daniel Hopwood. Fortunately for all of us, The Great Interior Design Challenge will be back on our screens in early 2017. In the meantime though, here is some advice from Studio Hopwood.

“The key with good design is just to have a limited palette of finishes. They say that you can build a palace with just three.” – Daniel Hopwood

Don’t go overboard on the amount of textures you need to add into a room. Start with three – a fabric, a shade of wood and a metal. Then take it from there.

Well we couldn’t leave out Daniel’s co-star on the new series of The Great Interior Design Challenge. Kelly Hoppen, the queen of taupe is an inspiration to many looking for luxurious, timeless interior design.

“LEARN TO LOOK NOT JUST WITH YOUR EYES BUT WITH YOUR HEART. FIND THE THINGS THAT CONNECT WITH YOU. HOW ELSE WILL YOU KNOW HOW TO DESIGN YOUR HOME?” – Kelly Hoppen

Don’t buy things just because someone tells you they will work within a scheme. Make sure you love everything you choose and that way the interior design of your home will be yours.

interior design tips

Always after timeless interior design, there is no better firm to turn to than the Hammett duo, known by their studio name Laura Hammett. Laura is very well known for her exquisite, yet timeless contemporary interiors.

“Luxury bathrooms are a big trend at the moment, moving away from the clean white marble look and introducing more softness and warmth with chandeliers, curtains and furniture.” – Laura Hammett

If you have the space, really do something different with your bathroom. They don’t have to be the most boring of spaces. Why can’t the bathroom create that interior design wow too?

Also know for her luxurious, yet timeless interior design projects, the Louise Bradley studio have an ever-increasing collection of bespoke luxury furniture and accessories.

“Clever layering of textiles alongside excellent space planning and good lighting make all the difference in the world” – Louise Bradley

We say it is an absolute must to focus on the lighting. If the lighting is right, the room will look great. But if you get the lighting wrong, the whole feel of the room will be totally different from how you hoped it would be.

interior design tips

Sometimes the best people to turn to for interior design tips, we cannot forget the brilliant interiors bloggers. A favourite of ours, and a must read blog if you don’t already is the brilliant Abigail Ahern. You cannot knock her for her bold and brave interior style.

“Play around with scale. Scale is one of the most under-considered components in the decorating puzzle. Once you start putting supersized pieces on walls or shelves that are small (like mirrors and lights) you create instant grandeur making a room feel more magical than it really is.” – Abigail Ahern

A great way to make your room feel larger is by adding in furniture that is lower down to the ground. This appears to make the ceilings feel higher, and in turn, make the room feel deceptively larger than it actually is. Then add in a huge oversized floor lamp to show off that extra height.

Finally, with not only a beautiful blog, but also with a beautiful interiors shop in Bloomsbury, Ben Pentreath offers his top interior design tips.

“I like richly layered rooms. Colour, pattern and a mix of old and new furniture create timeless and comfortable places to live.” – Ben Pentreath

The great thing about mixing old and new furniture is that it shows the wonders of the life you have lived and the places you have been. You want your home to tell the story of your life and be full of your treasures.

Storage Tips – where to hide the presents

Just in case you didn’t know, we are absolutely mad in love with storage. All of us at Furl just love as much storage as one can get. Seeing as December arrives in 2 days time, we thought it might be an idea to give our storage tips on where to hide those presents.

storage tips - where to hide the gifts

Now we have always been good at hiding, I mean we grew up with storage beds! The best hiding places EVER in case you wanted to know. However, the downside of our brilliant hiding places meant that we always found the presents. Now, I never knew if that was a good thing or a bad thing. I mean it gave us time to prepare our ‘wow thank you so much’ face to the present we never wanted. Yes we got really really good at it. However, we know that you wouldn’t have bought anything but wonderful, so here are our storage tips and places that won’t be found.

storage tips at christmas

Storage Tips – The Old Kitchen Bin

A survey has revealed that two thirds of children will go searching for presents before Christmas day. That put the pressure on us to make sure we give you some good hiding tips! Most of our throw away items end up in the garage, or the loft just in case we might need them again. That rule seems to still apply with the kitchen bin. And, would you go routing through an old bin? The garage and the loft are one of the most popular places to keep gifts hidden away. So be clever by putting the presents in a black bin liner, tying it up and popping it into the old kitchen bin. Just make sure your partner doesn’t decide to through it away after all.

storage tips

Storage Tips – The Car Boot

The survey also revealed that it wasn’t just the kids carrying out a pre Christmas search. So that got us thinking about where you could hide the gifts for your partner. If you don’t share a car, then the car boot is a brilliant place to hide presents. Make sure to pop the standard boot picnic blanket over the top of them. Also, ensure that your car is parked in a secure location. This we absolutely insist on. If you do share a car, then temporarily pack them into the boot on the way round to mum and dads house!

storage tips

Storage Tips – The Storage Bed

Furl first became obsessed with storage, and in turn storage beds long before we started making them. We actually make a storage bed that is large enough to be able to store full sized suitcases. Just think how many presents you could fit into a large suitcase. And better still – lock the suitcase.

Despite the cut off date for pre-christmas 2016 delivery behind us, there is no time like now to prepare to next year! Head to our showroom in London to see just how brilliant our storage beds really are. Don’t worry, we will keep your secret safe. Your presents will stay hidden next year. Of course, because no one will know that your bed is a storage bed. Clever hey.

We will count down from 10 to 1, now go and hide those presents. Ready or not, here we come…

5 things to do before the year ends

We are sure that there is a long list of all the things we wish to do before the end of the year. However time just seems to run away with us. So we thought we would collate a list here at Furl of the must do’s in London. Offering a little Furl help to give you a few things to do before the year ends.

things to do before the year ends

1. Outdoor Ice Skating

Grab those ice skates, or bottle those nerves and get yourself down to one of the magical outdoor ice rinks before the year is out. It is always on our list of things to do, but for some reason, we just can’t seem to manage to make it down there before Christmas. Even though it is always good fun, it’s just not quite the same visiting in January. Be sure to wrap up warm though. And a note from me, who used to ice skate – wear gloves! There is nothing worse than your fingers sticking to the floor, or should we say ice, when trying to get back up after a sneaky fall.

We say to try The Tower of London ice rink. With a view of the city one way and Tower Bridge the other way, it is just beautiful.

things to do

2. Take a mini break

It is the time of the holiday isn’t it? Why not treat yourself to a little mini break out of the city. You may have a few holiday days left to take so don’t waste them away. Even though we love the city in the run up to Christmas, it can get a little bit chaotic. Nothing helps you relax more than a lovely stroll along the seaside. Perhaps with a hot chocolate at this time of year rather than an ice cream!

We say to head to Brighton’s beautiful coast. Only a short train ride away from London you will get there in no time at all. Wander along the Lanes for quirky gift ideas and relax with a stroll along the coast.

things to do before the end of the year

3. Visit an exhibition

With so many exhibits switching over in the New Year, book a date in your diary to go and visit the one you hoped to all year. These exhibitions do not last forever, and very rarely do they come back. We are still hitting ourselves for not making time to visit the interactive rain room at the Barbican. Don’t make the same mistake we did. Put some time aside before the year is out and make sure you don’t miss out.

We suggest a trip to The Hive at Kew Gardens. The award winning 17m high structure really is out of this world.

thing to do in London before christmas

4. Take up a new hobby

A hobby doesn’t always have to mean a sport. And New Years resolutions never last. So why not take up a new hobby in the run up to the end of the year. Of course there are plenty of things to do, but we want it to be weird and wonderful. Recently Hermione Granger, okay yes we know, Emma Watson, was spotted on the tube dropping off books for strangers to read. One could perhaps say good deed as well as new hobby. Whichever you prefer to say, we know you and someone else will be smiling at the end of the day.

We think it would be a nice and creative idea to write little happiness notes. Then leave them dotted around various parts of London for a stranger to read and smile.

things to do before the end of the year

5. Try a new recipe

And last of all, but certainly not least of all, why not try a new recipe. It has to be an incredible creative recipe, or something that you have never tried before. Otherwise, there would be no fun in doing it! Yes everyone loves a good old spag bol, but we can surely wait until January for another one of those. You never know, adding a new recipe to your things to do before Christmas list, might surprise you. It may end up on the Christmas day dinner table.

We suggest that if you have never tried eating chocolate covered bacon, you try this brilliant recipe. Stupidly easy and don’t knock it before it try it kind of recipe. Mmm our mouths are watering just thinking about it.

With so many things to do before the year ends and with so little time, which ones would you choose?

Bedroom Colour Schemes – which one would you choose?

Which colour scheme best suits your bedroom? Yes you absolutely can fit new bedroom colour schemes around the things you already have. We can’t ditch each item we own every time we want to change the design of our bedroom. For one, it just wouldn’t be feasible. A couple of weeks ago we shared this article by House to Home about bedroom colour schemes on our Twitter. They had a few clever ideas, and so we want to add to those with our take on bedroom schemes.

Different bedroom colour schemes create different moods and also work for different locations. Let’s say your house or apartment is in the middle of the city. You probably wouldn’t want to design your bedroom using a coastal theme. Well you could, but it wouldn’t really work unless you put a very clever city spin on coastal. Yet to be done, so you would be the first!

bedroom colour schemes
Exposed concrete, hot pink, dark woods, bronze and vibrant turquoise

City Chic

There are many types of decoration that fit for the city. House to Home told us to marry together two hot colours such as turquoise and pink, and we could not agree more! You don’t have to over do it, but if you are going to, the city is the place to do it. Subtle pops of colour will still bring the room to life. It is simple and cheap to change the colours of your walls and the cushions that you dress your bed with. So why not paint the wall behind your headboard in a bright colour. Then you can compliment it with cushions on the bed in the same shade or another hot colour.

If you are lucky and have space, you could even add in a cute bedroom chair in vibrant turquoise velvet. This would fit with a room that has exposed concrete or brick walls and hanging filament bulbs, like so many forever trending industrial places do. But these bold colours would fit just as well with a room featuring soft thick carpet, mirror and lots of trending copper or bronze.

bedroom colour schemes
Soft grey paint, walnut wood, lilac linen, cowhide rug and white shutters

Comforting Country

Country rooms don’t always have to be super rustic. Wood can still work in a contemporary take on original country styled bedrooms. It just needs to be softened slightly. Do this by adding in loads of soft fabrics. If you have a wooden floor, cover it with an oversized rug to take that edge of the rustic. Take away any wooden blinds from the windows and add in painted shutters for a slightly more contemporary feel.

Typically country rooms are often kept dark to keep them looking and feeling cozy. If you fancy adding a contemporary spin, then brighten it up with a soft shade of colour or a bright white lick of paint to the walls. Add a lilac throw to the end of the bed with a complimenting blanket box. All white bedding alongside soft grey walls and a huge textured hide on the floor really do work a treat for that grown up feel.

bedroom colour schemes
Off white linen, reclaimed wooden furniture, green bedlinen, rope details and striped accessories

Coastal Cool

With a coastal interior, you have to be careful not to end up with it looking a little twee. You can mix up the typical coastal bedroom colour schemes by going green and white instead of the more traditional blue and white. Reclaimed wooden shelves or storage units will add a touch of rustic but nothing too much. Upholster the bed and headboard in beautiful off white linen alongside pale green linen sheets and cushions. With pendant bedside lights now the craze, you could hang lights that feature rope. Add in circular shaped white accessories or mirrors framed with rope or the like to bring that nautical feel back into the room.

So it is very important to pick your bedroom scheme not only around the items you already have, but also around the location in which you are based.

Comforting Halloween food perfect for our tables

Halloween is fast approaching and so is this winter weather…brrrr. These last few weeks we have had to wrap up warm. But that certainly hasn’t stopped us from heading out to the farms to pick this years winning pumpkin. With a few days still left to think about how we would like to carve our pumpkins this year, we thought it might be nice to offer a few of our favourite comforting Halloween food recipes instead. If you are having a little Halloween gathering, these foodie favourites shall certainly warm the spirits.

comforting halloween food

The Starter

There is nothing better than a bowl of warm, comforting Halloween inspired soup for the starter. Particularly Jamie Oliver’s pumpkin and ginger soup. Making soup is quick, easy and would look absolutely smashing served in a mini pumpkin. Cut off the pumpkin lid, scoop out the filling and keep it for the soup. When the soup is ready, ladle it into the pumpkin and pop the lid back on to keep it beautifully hot.

comforting halloween food

The Main

Comforting Halloween food is an absolute must for the main course. You certainly want to keep warm in between the trick or treat shifts. You can’t go wrong with a hairy bikers steak and ale pie. However by cooking a puff pastry lid separately, you could add in a couple of plastic spider before topping with the pastry lid. It might give your guests a fright, but would be certain to keep them entertained!

A little tipple

A fantastic favourite from BBC Good Food, this will be sure keep the adults relaxed, leaving the kids to run wild after snacking on all of those sweets. Just be careful to avoid any of those beetroot stains. Otherwise you may look like you have turned up in costume after all.
